Critical mistakes that are costing you
January 18, 2008 – 11:15 amHi,
One thing that has always made me nuts, to the point that I want to pick-up my monitor (or laptop) and shake it is the way some people write on their blog! Aaaagh. People - you NEED to follow some basic design principles (and common sense).
Here are a few things that really are distracting - are you making these mistakes?
- Write for yourself. Are you writing on your blog as if you’re talking to yourself? If you are — then you’re probably the only reader of your blog. Picture the reader - write as if you are talking to them, in person. How many times have you gone to a well presented and energetic presentation? Did you notice the presenter? Were they not looking right at you? I bet you retained more during that presentation and will pay to see them again.
- You are scared of whitespace.

likeoneBIGHUGEpage. Ugggh. That is so hard to read. Make use of white space. The ENTER key is your friend! Use correct spacing - 1 space after a comma and 2 spaces after a period, 1 or 2 spaces after an exclamation mark or question mark. Don’t be scared to use the ENTER key to keep one or two BLANK lines between your paragraphs and for crying out loud USE PARAGRAPHS.
- Is your blog just there for the heck of it? Or is it just one BIG advertisement, splattered with AdSense and anything else you can find? If your blog isn’t educating, nurturing, informing and building relationships perhaps you need to refocus?
- Do you hoard information? Yes, the idea of the blog and to gain readers is to later sell products and services — but remember it’s your readers that later turned into customers that have supported you. Give back to the people that have given to you. Several marketers that I’ve listed on the blogroll do just that regularly and I doubt it’s hurt their earnings. In fact I’d venture a guess that it’s helped them.
- Can’t contact the blog owner or no opt-in form. WAKE UP! Are you not using an opt-in form? Friend - there are dozens of unique ways to capture a readers name and e-mail address so that you can contact them later on. I use one. All the people in my blogroll use an opt-in form as well. Give something away to have them sign up, is one way to capture an e-mail address. Another way (hang on for this, it’s pretty unique) provide USEFUL information so that they come back for more!
There are waaay more things that I see wrong when I visit some sites - but these are the ones that drive me nuts.
Regards,
Mohamed
